Steering Committee for the Alcohol Change Course offered by the Online Therapy Unit
Opportunity Details
Position type: Patient Partner

Number of positions available: Two (2)

Organization: Online Therapy Unit - University of Regina

Role overview: We are looking for individuals with lived experience of alcohol use problems either as an individual or as a family member to be a part of a Patient-Oriented Research Steering Committee. On this committee you will be asked to engage with research, community’s stakeholders and other patient partners to work towards enhancing the Alcohol Change Course offered by the Online Therapy Unit. This project began earlier this year and started with content revisions and is presently accepting participants. Remaining tasks that you will be involved in will include recruitment planning and implementation, review of results, knowledge sharing activities, and planning future directions. In this research project, we are particularly interested in refining patient stories and also resources on issues that are often comorbid with alcohol misuse, such as PTSD, cannabis use, anger, and grief.

Knowledge, experience, skills required: Lived experience with alcohol misuse either as an individual or a family member and a desire to increase access to evidence-based online services for individuals wishing to make changes to their alcohol use. Good command of the English language as Patient Partners will be asked to review and comment on materials presented in English.

Time commitment: We ask that individuals will be involved in project activities approximately 1-2 hours every 1 to 2 months either by reviewing and commenting on materials via email or attending steering committee meetings. We anticipate there will be approximately 7 of steering committee meetings until the end of the project March 31, 2024 . Each meeting will be approximately 1 to 2 hrs and will happen sometime between 8:30 and 4:30 Monday to Friday. We seek committee input in scheduling these meetings.

Location: The Online Therapy Unit is located in Regina Saskatchewan at the University of Regina. Patient Partners should be Saskatchewan residents but meetings are conducted virtually via Zoom.

What you can expect from the research team: A guiding principle of the Patient-Oriented Research Steering Committee is to foster a patient-centered approach, whereby individuals with personal or family-related experience with issues related to alcohol misuse are active participants in research and knowledge exchange. The research team will provide opportunities for Patient Partners to collaborate and partner on reviewing data, modifying materials for future use and ideally coming up with future directions together.

The research team will make every effort to engage with Patient Partners through the project. The team will seek feedback on timing of meetings, share the meeting minutes with all members of the committee and communicate opportunities for patient partner involvement as they come up. Decisions will be made by consensus, but when consensus is not reached priority will be given to Patients With Lived Experience. Patient Partners will be empowered to be involved in activities between meetings, but this will be fully determined by their preference.
